The Steampunk style has grown considerably over the last 30 years – although the roots of the genre aren’t obvious, its influence on current popular culture is evident.

So, what is the Steampunk genre? A reimagined past or a look into a dystopian future?

Noun: A genre of science fiction with a historical setting and typically features steam-powered machinery rather than advanced technology.

As the name suggests, steam is an essential element of the steampunk genre. The origins of this style are said to have come from the idea of an industrial utopia where steam is the primary energy source.

The Steampunk genre has been a growing phenomenon, known best for its depiction in sci-fi movies and books. The impact of the style in terms of fashion is probably the most recognisable; however, this isn’t as far as it goes.

“Steampunk is a genre that imagines how different the past might have been has the future come earlier.”

Douglas Fetherling (Author)

There are elements of ‘steampunk’ in almost every aspect of modern media, and once you know what you’re looking for, you’ll recognise it everywhere.

As the name suggests, ‘steampunk’ is a mix of better-known sci-fi genre cyberpunk, with the concept of steam-powered machinery. Not only does it take elements from steam-powered machinery, but it is exuberant and exaggerated in the best way, much like the rest of our furniture.

The industrial revolution heavily influences the steampunk genre, so it felt like a natural progression to include the genre in our growing product portfolio.

Due to the style’s retro roots, you won’t find any plastic or fossil-based products here – in fact, the most popular materials found in the Steampunk genre are all-natural, like metals (mainly copper) and wood, which you’ll find in abundance in our workshop.
