It has been almost two years since we first launched one of the pieces in the Great Western Collection. First, we released the Great Western Table, shortly followed by the Great Western Desk a few days later. Both pieces have become very popular, with a couple of each shipped across the pond to the USA.
Since then, our designers have been working hard on new pieces to add to this industrially-inspired collection, which now consists of nine pieces.
The Great Western Collection
The Great Western Collection evokes the spirit of Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s work with its elegant and sophisticated home or office goods. The collection includes various items, such as furniture, home décor, and gifts.
We take a look at each piece and the engineer that inspired it all:
The Great Western Table
The original inspiration for the unique design of the Great Western Table comes from the old passenger sheds found at Bristol Temple Meads train station. The exquisite roof supports found in the passenger sheds, designed by Brunel, were used as a starting point for the main arch section of the Table.
The Great Western Height Adjustable Desk
Since its release, the Great Western Height Adjustable Desk has become incredibly popular. The combination of 19th Century engineering with modern, height-adjusting mechanics makes for an equally functional, as it is beautiful, desk.
The Great Western Bench
Our flagship Great Western Table deserves a Bench equally as great. The elegant curves and hard industrial lines complement but do not outshine the meticulous design of the Table.
The Great Western TV Unit
We know it’s hard to keep your eyes off this one. Use the Great Western TV Unit in your home or at the office, as it perfectly completes a boardroom. The shelving on each side provides space to display your industrially-inspired trinkets, while the drawers and cupboards underneath offer storage space with the luxury of keeping it hidden.
The Great Western Chair
Following the success of our Forge Chair, we decided to up our game slightly and added the Great Western Chair to the collection. Featuring our vegan-friendly leatherette, we’ve kept it simple with a classic tufted upholstery technique.
The Great Western Executive Chair
The 5-star chair base initially caused some challenges with our design team. Taking our chair design to the next level, we introduced our first-ever Executive Chair design. The finished Great Western Executive Chair design takes office seating to a whole new level.
New | The Great Western Sofa
One of our two new pieces being added to the collection, our Brunel Sofa, has been extremely popular since we released it in June 2021. We decided it was time to design a Great Western version. We’ve improved the upholstery designs since then, with the new Great Western Sofa featuring single cushions on the backrest and seat of the sofa for a more cohesive look.
We continue to use crib-5 tested, vegan-friendly fabric for the classic-tufted upholstery. The design features several elements you’ll have seen throughout the rest of the collection, each using design features of some of Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s work as inspiration.
New | The Great Western Round Table
Round tables are great for collaboration. With our Steampunk Round Table and Grand Steampunk Round Table holding down the ’round table’ fort, we’ve introduced the Great Western Round Table. Instead of two solid iron cast wheels like the regular Great Western, we’ve gone for one right in the centre of the Table, underneath the glass insert.
If you are limited on space, have a smaller team or prefer a round table, this one is for you.
Isambard Kingdom Brunel: A Visionary Engineer
Isambard Kingdom Brunel was a visionary engineer considered one of the greatest engineers ever. He was born in 1806 in Portsmouth, England, and died in 1859 at 53. During his short life, he designed and built some of the world’s most iconic and important structures, including the Great Western Railway, the Clifton Suspension Bridge, and the SS Great Britain.
Brunel was a pioneer in engineering, and he always pushed the boundaries of what was possible. He was also a master of detail and took great pride in the quality of his work. His designs were functional and aesthetically pleasing and have stood the test of time.
