A number of our commercial projects involve us working with an interior designer or contract furniture supplier rather than directly with the client. On this occasion we were contacted by Tsunami Axis as they were working on a project for Expedia, in Prague that required a very large industrial Oak meeting table.

INDUSTRIAL STYLE OAK TABLE WITH LIVE EDGE OAK TOP

The Brief

The brief was to design and produce an ‘African’ style industrial Oak meeting table for a themed boardroom they were working on. Although we typically incorporate a lot of steel into our designs on this particular item they only wanted Oak to be visible. After working on a few concepts we settled on a design that was to use a live edge Oak top with a large central base that could be used to hide cables. We were able to source 4 huge Oak slabs each around 4700x750x60mm in size. It was decided to use the largest two pieces and rather than alter their shape simply use them as they were. This allowed us to create a very organic piece with irregular edges and a natural feel. Rather than machining the top edge we decided to sympathetically hand sand so as to retain some of the original bandsaw markings that would have been produced during the first milling process. This allowed part of the industrial charm to shine through. A dark Oak colour was chosen with a satin sheen. This provided a luxurious finish that would be perfect for the themed boardroom. The base of the table utilised a steel frame to provide support for the very heavy top. This was carefully clad in matching Oak along with a discrete door for accessing the cables and other computer equipment.
